Everyone experiences anxiety from time to time. For some, anxiety is a controlling force that is not easily tamed. Some people need a specialized treatment approach to help them bring balance back to their lives. Alexian Brothers Behavioral Health Hospital has designed the Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and Related Anxiety Disorders Program to offer a comprehensive course of treatment to directly address these concerns.

Our program provides care for a number of common anxiety disorders including:

  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) involves intrusive, unwanted thoughts that people attempt to neutralize by doing compulsive acts or ritualized behaviors
  • Panic Disorder is characterized by panic attacks that occur suddenly and without warning. These can lead to avoidance of places or events you used to enjoy.
  • Social Phobia causes fears of embarrassment, humiliation or evaluation by others.
  • Post Traumatic Stress Disorder results from significant fears related to past traumatic events or near death experiences.
  • Phobias are fears of specific events, places, or things.
  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder results in significant worry about multiple events for more than six months.

Anxiety can be experienced in many ways including:

  • Pounding heart
  • Refusal to go to class, school, or work
  • Extreme shyness
  • Excessive hand washing
  • Constant checking of items such as locks, doors, windows
  • Avoidance or fear of people, places, or things
  • Constant worry
  • Extreme startle response
  • Reassurance seeking
  • Severe fear of public speaking
  • Sleep disturbance
  • Hyperventilation
  • Sweating
  • Not eating or over eating
  • Fear of losing control
  • Hoarding of materials or pets
  • Self-medication with drugs or alcohol
