About Us

Self Injury

Sometimes emotional hurt is so deep that we turn to various forms of self-injury or destructive behaviors as a way to cope. Ask yourself these questions:

  • Do you physically hurt yourself or put yourself in harmful situations as a way to manage or avoid your feelings or punish yourself?
  • Do you deliberately engage in self-harming behaviors such as cutting or burning?
  • Do you hide your scars or purposely injure in places people won't see?
  • Do you display your scars to "prove" something to yourself or others?
  • Do you find yourself thinking about suicide as a way to escape your pain or self-harm as a means of coping with your unhappiness?

If you answer "yes" to any of these questions, self-injury and destructive behavior may be a problem for you. Self-injury can be defined as any one of the many behaviors aimed at intentionally harming yourself for the purpose of coping with unmanageable thoughts or feelings. This can include cutting, burning, carving, self-poisoning, piercing, tattooing, picking, scraping, or breaking bones.

Self-Injury Recovery Services at Alexian Brothers Behavioral Health Hospital offers professional assistance in understanding the problems that lead to self-injury and breaking the cycle of hurting yourself.

Our program focuses on helping you identify and manage unhealthy or self-defeating behaviors. We then equip you to replace negative and destructive behaviors with healthier coping strategies. The goal is to empower you to handle your life circumstances without resorting to self-injury. We conduct a no-cost care screening to determine which program is appropriate for you. We can then adjust your care as needed. Our range of therapeutic services includes:

  • Inpatient hospitalization treatment
  • Partial hospitalization treatment (6 hours per day and up to 5 days per week) designed for those who can benefit from a longer, structured day yet do not require an inpatient setting
  • Intensive outpatient treatment (3 hours a day and up to 5 days a week) designed for those who need a less structured program.
