Stenting of Carotid Atherosclerosis
This patient had suffered a stroke due to a fatty/cholesterol blockage (“atheromatous plaque”) in the left carotid artery.
A magnified view shows an ulceration in the plaque, as well as significant narrowing of the artery.
The carotid was reopened with balloon angioplasty and a stent was positioned to help keep the vessel fully open.
The patient had no further strokes or mini-strokes after carotid angioplasty and stenting.
