It is common for older adults to be taking multiple medications at the same time. If these medications are not taken as prescribed, it can actually worsen a person's overall health. The Alexian Senior Care Pharmacist works with physicians and other healthcare providers to monitor and manage drug therapies in older adults to help physicians better understand drug side effects, risks, benefits, interactions and doses.
The Alexian Senior Care Pharmacist is certified in geriatric pharmacy to ensure that older adult health needs and medications are properly handled. Our pharmacist:
- Conducts a review of the drugs being taken to look for any drug-drug or drug-food interactions, duplication of therapy or adverse drug reactions
- Ensures that prescribed medications are the best and most effective available
- Coaches and educates on how and when to take medications
- Discusses medication schedule with physicians and nurses
- Offers advice on new medications and generic versus brand name medications
