Alexian Brothers Sleep Health Center
Our Tests, Treatments and Therapies
An evaluation may consist of specific screening tools utilized to assess your condition. In order to fully understand your sleep, your health care provider may recommend a sleep test, or polysomnogram, which will evaluate your sleep concerns.
A "sleep study" may be ordered by your physician to assess your sleep-related problems. The sleep study is an outpatient, non-invasive, painless test that typically requires six to eight hours to conduct. Alexian Sleep Health Center offers private, sleep study rooms that feel like a hotel room but are equipped with sensors that monitor breathing, brain waves, muscle activity, heart rate, oxygen and body movements. Our sleep technicians observe and document your sleep. A board-certified specialist reviews the information. A final written report with treatment recommendations is sent to your doctor.
Some common treatments recommended to improve your sleep health may include:
- Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) devices; a nasal mask used during sleep to keep your upper airway open.
- Night oxygen therapy.
- Weight loss plan to reduce the severity of, or eliminate, sleep apnea.
- Surgery to open the airway to eliminate or to reduce obstructions, such as removing the tonsils and adenoids.
- Medication to treat specific sleep disorders prescribed under the supervision of an Alexian physician.
- Helping you to recognize and change bad sleep and wake habits.
- Relaxation training to relax your mind and body.
- Behavioral therapy that can help you find long-term strategies for overcoming fear and anxiety that might be at the root of some sleep disorders.
